New in 2008, the N.C. Children's Promise has partnered with American Way Thrift Stores to accept donations of your gently used clothing and household items. Keep an eye on your mailbox. You will receive a postcard notice alerting you when our trucks will be in your neighborhood.
The N.C. Children’s Promise does not run its own thrift stores, nor does it match donated goods with patients or their families. Rather, we have contracted with American Way Thrift Stores to purchase your donated items and sell them in their thrift stores throughout the state, with proceeds benefiting North Carolina Children’s Hospital.
What items are most needed? Are there certains items that you cannot accept?
We appreciate all your donations. Items we need most include: housewares, including dishes, glassware, and pots and pans; electronics, including computers and TVs (in working order) as well as fan, heaters, and AC units; bedding items; curtains and draperies; toys, games, and tools; clothing, shoes, and accessories (all sizes/types for men, women, and children); and furniture in good condition.
Unfortunately, we cannot accept food items, large appliances, or hazardous materials or chemicals. If you have a question about a specific item, please call our Donation Services Line at (877) 543-7022 or (919) 832-KIDS.
I have items to donate. How do I schedule a thrift store pick-up?
Haven't received a postcard? Want to schedule a pick-up at your convenience? We invite you to call our Donation Services Line at (877) 543-7022 or (919) 832-KIDS to schedule a pick-up. You may also use our online scheduling service by clicking the "Schedule a Thrift Store Pick-up" button on the left.
It is supposed to rain today. Will the drivers still pick-up donations?
The drivers collect donations on their scheduled routes rain or shine. On rainy days, however, we recommend that you place your items in a carport or porch clearly visible from the street. Be sure that each of your donated items is labeled "NCCP," especially furniture.
The thrift store was scheduled to pick-up my donation today, but the items are still here. What should I do?
The drivers always do their best to spot your donated items, but every once in a while they might miss something. If that happens to you, please call our Donation Services Line at (877) 543-7022 or (919) 832-KIDS to report the missed pick-up, and the thrift store will dispatch someone to get your donation. We apologize in advance for the inconvenience.
NOTE: Due to overwhelming response in support of this new program, the thrift store partner we work with to coordinate donation collection has experienced an unexpected 60 percent increase in donation volume. That is a direct reflection of your (and your neighbor's!) generosity and support. THANK YOU!
While we are thrilled with this early success, it means that—with our trucks full—we've occassionally been forced to leave some donations behind to collect the following day. If this happens to you, the drivers will leave a postcard notice and return the following day to pick-up your items.
We regret any inconvenience this may cause. We are committed to addressing these challenges in the coming weeks. In the meantime, we thank you for your patience and continued support.
